I have always wanted to review music, books, and movies. But I have always hesitated because, being a writer myself, I understand that negative reviews suck. It's like: if they are going to tell me what I am doing wrong, would it kill them to say it nicely? Most artists work tirelessly to perfect the craft that they put out, and I think that has to count for something.
I think the Lord thinks so too, because He came up with a solution.
The Jane Review
My friends know me. I am an unrepentant Pride and Prejudice lover. I have probably read about 50-100 P&P Variations/Retellings/Vagaries.
P&P is that epic fairy tale where the servant girl does not let the prince off the hook, just because he is the prince. She knows her worth and her dad won't let her forget it.
For those who have read the book, you already know where this is going...
For those who haven't, let me catch you up: Jane Bennet - who this review is named after - is an elder sister to Elizabeth Bennet (the female protagonist of P&P).
Here is the cool thing about Jane Bennet: she was "a great deal too apt to like people in general." But she was also able to "be candid without ostentation or design - to take the good of everybody's character and make it still better, and say nothing of the bad." (Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice).
So, yeah...
The Jane Review is about being candid, yet pleasant: expounding on the good in a piece of work, but also nicely discussing what needs to be made better, like Jane Bennet would.
